u14 tour, September 2008: update September 26

September 20: a good start to the beginning of the September 2008 under 14s GISS/MPFC representative team tour ... steady results and good play shown by the Australian and Isalanders Sardegnian Italian GISS players. Results: MPFC 0 v 1 Juventus, MPFC 0 v 1 Torino Calcio, MPFC 0 v 2 Biellese, MPFC 2 v 3 Sc.Gabbetto.

September 26: the last two games saw MPFC play the most exciting game of the tour against Vado FC under 15's youth team, finishing 3-3. The team showed great determination coming back from a 3-1 score, the 4 participating Melbourne players Paraskevas, Carbone, Carter, and Goulopoulos being the backbone of the team, and showing the Italian teams that MPFC was no pushover, and playing up to the level.

Yesterday the final game of the tour against serie A giants Genoa CFC (the strongest team they competed against, with 25 players), the score was 2-2 at half time and then MPFC legs just ran out... but a great show of spectacular goals and play shown by both teams, finishing 6-2 for the home team! The players had not only learnt by playing and training but also were very fortunate to see three live Serie A games: Juventus v Catania in Torino at the new Olympic stadium, Sampdoria v Chievo, where GISS star D'anna plays, and Sampdoria v Juventus in Genoa. Then to head home on the 28th. (more images...>>)

As of September 2008, Morris Pagniello and the famous Gigi Maifredi ((left)) - Juventus 1st team coach in the 80's and 90s' - are to jointly open a new football academy. Gigi Maifredi is renowned as one of Italy's major icons in the football world.

The Maifredi family management group will also be GISS's Fifa agents for Italy. Christian Maifredi (pictured on the right) visited Australia in January and met with Gaby Priolo (GISS Australian Administrative Director) and Joe De Martino (Head Coach, GISS) to discuss future plans for the Australian academy.

Morris commented: "I'm very honoured and excited that the Maifredi family have chosen to work with GISS (Italy), as it proves that we have been able to take players and turn them into professionals in a short span of time. Players must realize that football is not just a game, if you want to earn an income playing football as a career, you must dedicate your whole life to it.... and enjoy the world's most famous game!"
